About Us

Occupy Gplus Censorship (OGC) is a group of G+ users from around the world who believe that the free flow of information is vital to the development and diversity of Google+ as a global community. Be it science, technology, religion, politics, literature or art, you should feel free to express yourself without fear of censorship – or the anxiety of receiving unwanted content.

In real life, people are free to share what they care about, as well as control what they take into their hearts and homes. But, as in real life, part of what some cherish may be offensive to others. We are seeking a solution to this dilemma – where nobody is restricted in their freedom to share legal content and nobody has something imposed on them which they find objectionable.

We do not in any way condone illegal content or activities on G+. It is not our intention to advocate pornography. We do, however, feel that it is in the best interests of everyone if Google replaced its current practice of censorship with a content filtering system, not unlike that already available in Google Search or Blogger. This way you have complete control over the legal content in your stream, sharing or receiving.

We are simply advocating freedom of choice.

When you are at home, at work or at your local coffee shop, you should be able to control the content you receive. Whether the concerns about legal content are based on cultural, religious, or personal beliefs, any such judgment is ultimately subjective. Banning content from public streams based on subjective evaluations stifles the free flow of information. Censoring legal content does not promote discussion or dialogue, a better understanding of different cultures, or bring us closer together as individuals.

Ambiguous censorship is not the answer. Content control is the answer. Freedom of choice is the solution that meets the needs of everyone.

If you agree, we ask that you circle us so that we can keep you updated. If you agree, we ask that you “sign” our statement (provided below for your consideration). If you want to be even more involved, please message us.

Dear Google,*

We love you and we love Google+! We want users to be able to build G+ into a global community that thrives on the free flow of information about everything, including science, technology, literature, religion, politics and art. We desire diversity, not conformity. We expect dialogue, not ambiguous rules and subjective censorship.

We feel, just as in real life, users should be able to control what they are exposed to, but also be free to share and receive whatever they personally care about. Content controls are a better solution for everyone, instead of censorship.

We simply want freedom of choice!

Please, at a minimum, implement content control filters similar to what you already offer on Google Search and Blogger. We ask nothing more than to be able to control the legal content in our own streams.

Sincerely,
G+ Users
